Sour Honey is the story of Maria Adirisa, a beautiful girl endowed with great intelligence, and her mother’s only child. Her father Okwera, who sees her as his only hope, can never stop bragging about her brilliance, and about his good fortune in having begotten such a daughter. He firmly believes that she will go on to the University and become a very important person indeed after that. But one ill-starred day, Maria meets baldheaded Jimmy, who is more than twice her age, and her father’s great dream goes up in smoke.
“Sour Honey is a masterly executed novel, a stunning portrayal of elements of the human drama that are local yet universal, contemporary but also timeless. There is something in it for every reader. With the publication of this first novel Mary Abago established herself as a writer of very great promise indeed. “ Austin Ejiet.
