This is the first illustrated guide to the names of the long horned Ankole cows. The interest to compile the guide arose out of the author’s extensive interaction with cattle keepers in Mbarara district which used to be part of the old Ankole kingdom. The guide contains many photographs to illustrate the different names of the Ankole cows and how they were derived. A section on words and terms associated with Ankole3 cows has been added to the reader appreciate the significance of cattle to the culture of Banyankore and other pastoral communities.
Mark Infied is an advisor and the management of protected areas and community relarions. He studied Zoology at Durham University Uk ; community attitude to conservation at the University of Natal, RSA ; and recently completed a doctoral thesis on the cultural values of protected areas at the University of East Anglia, UK.
He worked as an advisor to the Uganda wildlife Authority on community elements of managing protected areas. He was particularly associated with the development of a community approach to the management of Lake Mburo National Park, Mbarara district, where he spent several years. During his work there he came to recognize both the beauty and the cultural significance of the long horned Ankole cow. He is married with two children and currently lives in Vietnam.
